Spring Seminar – Murrayshall

Your committee are unsure whether moving this seminar nearer the North Area worked as an idea or not.  Proportionally the Area was well represented but it did not attract those numbers who attend North Area meetings on a regular basis.  However, we shall not give up.  We shall be returning to Murrayshall for the Spring Seminar in 2013 so please keep it in mind.  Doubts regarding the suitability of the date were considered by the impact of the weather makes it risky to hold the event earlier.

What was agreed was that perhaps the course was too long in the conditions and perhaps the kind offer of a significant discount on buggies should have been taken up by more (most?) of us.  We shall negotiate with the resort and perhaps have a two tier charge.  Those only attending the seminar and those golfing the charge for which would include a buggy rate.  Watch this space!

Scottish Region v North Area of England.

This match was held at Northumberland Golf Club which, for those who don’t know, threads its way in and out of Gosford Park race course. (Cuddies!)  Can you imagine no golf until the race meeting is finished?

Jamie Forteath (a Scot in exile) the host Secretary, made us most welcome and perhaps the feeling that we were among friends lowered our guard somewhat.  The nett result was that we were defeated by 3.5 matches to 2.5 matches which was however a very creditable performance. Tom Kelly had to lead the team as a single against the English pairing due to a late withdrawal due to a family tragedy.  He was defeated on the last to (an acknowledged jammy putt).

Summer Meeting at Hilton Park Golf Club.

This event was held on a really poor day for weather but the course held up remarkably well and those who did turn up reached harbour safely.  Our thanks go of course to the host secretary Gordon Simpson who had to withdraw on the day due to a family emergency.  The results were as follows;

Captains Tankard;

Winner          Alan Williams with 36 points (His first ever Association prize!)

Runner up    Ian Murchison with 34 points BB6  (The evergreen!)

Third              Jim Kean with 34 points (A new dark horse perhaps?)

The Ladies Vase was not contested as there were no Ladies present.

Regional Match v North Area of Scotland.

This was held at Ballater Golf Club on 5 th July.  The Region handed out a comprehensive spanking to the North Area but as was pointed out by the illustrious John Ramage MBE, as your Regional Secretary was not playing he (WAO) had no bragging rights!!!!!  The body may be failing but the humour still functions!!

Regional Match v ELPC.

Due to the clubhouse relocation at Baberton the match was held this year at Bruntsfield Links.  For the first time in memory the original chosen twenty Association players all turned up on the day to play.  This however was the only high spot of the day as the ELPC handed out a 6.5 to 3.5 drubbing to the Association.  Now if only the Regional Secretary had been playing!!

Autumn Outing to Musselburgh (Monktonhall) Golf Club.

This will take place on Wednesday 5 th September and a tear off entry slip is attached.  It is with some disquiet that there seems to be a trend (noticed in golf clubs) that members are holding back to the last minute before entering.  This results in members not having paid in advance but please be advised that the Association policy is that any number confirmed to a host club will be paid for, even if they don’t turn up.  Remember, we know where you live!!

We continue our initiative of holding a mini seminar beforehand in order to bring some ‘business’ to the day.  The proposed speaker will be on the subject of the alternatives for the provision of catering within clubs which appears to be a hot topic at the moment.  Please indicate if you intend to attend the seminar on your return slip.

Scottish regional committee members please note that there shall be a committee meeting commencing at 9.00am.

The schedule for the day is;

11.00am        Presentation

12noon           Bacon roll and coffee lunch

1.00pm till 2.30pm Golf

Two course meal to follow

Presentation of prizes.

Gleneagles Seminar.

The programme will be issued separately in the next week or so.  The final details are being agreed with HQ.

Regional Website

Several of the Associations other area websites have been reviewed and attempts are being made to cherry pick the best aspects for our own.  However this has meant it is rather a large undertaking and will probably be done in the coming autumn and winter.  All of the photos taken at this years events are already loaded so you will see them eventually.

Allan Osborne
